Reaching an altitude of 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. There are, higher peaks on other continents,
but Kilimanjaro is effectively the world´s largest single mountain, a free- standing entity rising an incredible 5km above the surrounding plains, and on rare occasions when it is not veiled in clouds, the
mountain´s distinctive silhouette and snow capped peaks are one of the most breathtaking sights on the continent.
Kilimanjaro is also the highest mountain anywhere that can be ascended by somebody without specialized mountaineering
expierence or equipment.
Kilimanjaro in geological terms is a relatively young mountain, like most other large mountains near the Rift Valley, first
formed through volcanic activity erupting about one million years ago.
